Ministry Development

Green shoots in potsAs part of the Canterbury Diet for Incumbents clergy are expected and encouraged to identify and engage with continuing ministerial learning and development. Records are kept of the training that each minister undertakes and for training that requires CMD funding a record of the cost is also kept.

Training and Funding

The Mission and Ministry Framework organise a range of training days and seminars (often with guest speakers) over the course of the year.  Details of courses, workshops and events are advertised in the and diocesan mailings.

Additionally clergy are able to apply for CMD funding towards the costs of training that has been identified as their Ministerial Development Review (MDR).  Training may include conferences, retreats, workshops, mentoring, post-graduate study.. Applicants should complete the CMD Application Form (clearly identifying how the training links to their MDR) and return to Marianne Hambrook for consideration by Neville Emslie (ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½Ò•îl of Mission and Ministry) for consideration.  Applicants are requested to seek CMD funding before booking training as acceptance cannot be guaranteed and amounts granted may be less than those requested.  To dicuss CMD ahead of application contact Canon Dr Neville Emslie, ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½Ò•îl of Mission and Ministry, 01227 459401

Accommodation and Travel Expenses

Expenses can be claimed for the reimbursement of accommodation and travel expenses for courses outside the Diocese. Travel expenses may be claimed for standard class rail or mileage rates (45p per mile). Expenses for events within the Diocese will not be refunded. Expenses claim forms should be returned to Marianne Hambrook,

Parish contribution to Ministry Development

It is good practice for PCCs to contribute to costs which will always be expected to be part of ministry such as retreats, spiritual direction and regular quiet days. Additionally, parishes are expected to pay for for travel to events within the Diocese. It is good practice for parishes to provide a book allowance per annum. This is best itemised and paid directly by the parish treasurer.

How CMD is Funded

Our diocese annually budgets the equivalent of 1% of stipend (for all licensed clergy) to the provision and support of Continuing Ministerial Development. This training fund is used to pay for:

  • individual CMD applications
  • Diocesan training for clergy
  • supporting clergy in key transitions in their ministry.

The focus is upon equipping and enabling ministry with a view to the needs of the local church, deanery and Diocese. The Diocese has moved away from the administration of individual financial accounts and is now concerned with providing resources at the point of need for clergy to equip them for the challenges of ministry. ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½Ò•îl is committed to the national guidelines on Continuing Ministerial Development and the Terms and Conditions of Service..
